CHAPTER 2

Lesson 18 · Counting

Counting is very important. Learn numbers early so that you can use prices, addresses and times.
Usually, there are 4 stages:
stage 1: count from 1 to 10. This enables you to spell other numbers
stage 2: count from 11 to 20
stage 3: count to 100
stage 4: the rest

counting is very important
we start with 0

from 1 - 10

from 11 - 20

How to write numbers

The separated parts in the diagrams help you hear the order. In ordinary Dutch, write these numbers together: eenentwintig, tweeëntwintig, drieëndertig, tweehonderd, elfhonderd. Do not copy the teaching hyphens into normal spelling.

For 21, say the unit first, then en, then the tens: eenentwintig. For 32: tweeëndertig.

counting: till 100

Counting: the rest

Counting: higher and higher

Now we show sentences with numbers

1 I want 3 cola
2 I want 2 glasses of water
3 I have 5 euro
4 do you have 10 euro?

When we arrived...

When we came to the Netherlands for the first time we saw the prices of the houses. Prices are high in the Netherlands. It is an expensive country. That was the reason we both needed a job

1 house for sale
2 the house costs 400.000 euro
3 that is expensive

Test

1 Cola
2 I want 2 glasses of water
3 I have 5 euro
4 Do you have 10 euro?
1 House for sale
2 The house costs 400.000 euro
3 That is expensive

Use of "the" or "a"

Learn each noun with its article: het huis, de man. Some patterns help: plurals use de and singular diminutives use het. Use een for one unspecified countable item: een huis. Compare Ik zie een huis. — I see a house — with Het huis is groot. — The house is big.
