CHAPTER 5

Lesson 43 · Use of "er"

A SMALL WORD · FOUR USEFUL PATTERNS

What does er do?

Look at the situation, listen to the example and try it yourself. Learn these four common uses one at a time.

01

Introduce something

Something is there

A cat sitting in a garden

Er is een kat in de tuin.

There is a cat in the garden.

Use er is for one thing and er zijn for more than one. You are introducing something.

One cat: Er is een kat.
More birds: Er zijn vogels.

Another example

Er zijn veel vogels op het plein.

There are many birds on the square.

Er ___ veel vogels op het plein.

02

Avoid repeating the place

A place we already know

A resident by a canal house in Utrecht

Woon je in Utrecht?
Ja, ik woon er.

Do you live in Utrecht? Yes, I live there.

The place has already been mentioned. Er refers back to that place.

Ik woon er. = Ik woon in Utrecht.
Use daar when you want to point out or emphasise the place.

Another example

Werk je in Amsterdam?
Ja, ik werk er.

Do you work in Amsterdam? Yes, I work there.

Woon je in Utrecht? Ja, ik woon ___.

Ja, ik woon er.

03

Avoid repeating what you count

How many?

Exactly three red apples on a table

Hoeveel appels heb je?
Ik heb er drie.

How many apples do you have? I have three.

We already know which things we are counting. Er replaces that noun, while the number stays in the sentence.

Ik heb er drie. = Ik heb drie appels.
Compare: Er zijn drie appels. introduces the apples; it does not replace the word appels.

Another example

Wil je koekjes?
Ja, ik wil er twee.

Would you like biscuits? Yes, I would like two.

Your turn

Complete the sentence. Open it to check your answer.

Hoeveel appels heb je? Ik heb ___ drie.

Ik heb er drie.

Wil je koekjes? Ja, ik wil ___ twee.

Ja, ik wil er twee.

04

Refer back to a thing or topic

About it, with it, on it…

A woman looking at a photograph of her beach holiday

Denk je aan je vakantie?
Ja, ik denk eraan.

Are you thinking about your holiday? Yes, I am thinking about it.

Er can combine with a preposition to refer to a thing or topic already mentioned. Here, eraan refers to aan je vakantie.

Write the combination as one word when the parts are next to each other: eraan, erover, ervan.
If another word comes between the parts, write them separately: er vaak aan.

Another example

Ik denk er vaak aan.

I often think about it.
