CHAPTER 5

Lesson 44 · Reflexive verbs

Who is the action about?

Some Dutch verbs use a small word such as me, je or zich that refers back to the person doing the action. These are called reflexive verbs.

SOMETHING ELSE

Ik was de auto.

I wash the car.

The car is what I wash.
MYSELF

Ik was me.

I wash myself.

The person washing and the person being washed are the same.
Not every reflexive verb describes a literal action on yourself. Learn the small word with the verb: Ik vergis me. means “I am mistaken”.

Choose the right small word

The small word changes with the person. Use this overview as a guide.
