DUTCH COURSE · LEARN & PRACTISE

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI)

An adult learner practises speaking with a voice assistant on her phone.

A LITTLE PRACTICE, EVERY DAY

Your Dutch conversation partner

Practise ordering, introducing yourself or talking about your day. An AI assistant can take the other role, ask questions and help you try again.

You can type your answers or use a voice feature when it is available. The aim is simple: use the Dutch you already know.

A five-minute practice routine

01

Choose one situation

Start with something familiar: buying bread, meeting a neighbour or ordering a drink.

02

Take turns

Ask for short sentences and one question at a time. Answer in Dutch, even if your answer is only a few words.

03

Try it again

Ask for one useful correction. Say the improved sentence aloud, then use it in another answer.

Start your first conversation

Copy this instruction into your chosen AI chat. Change A1 to your level and English to the language you want for explanations.

Be my Dutch conversation partner. I am learning at A1 level. We are in a bakery. You are the shop assistant and I am the customer. Use short Dutch sentences. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. If we use voice, speak slowly. After each answer, correct one important mistake briefly, then continue the conversation. If I ask for help, explain in English. Start by greeting me.

This page does not start an AI conversation itself. Paste the instruction into the service you choose.

What a short exchange can look like

You are the customer in a bakery.

A customer orders a loaf of brown bread from a baker.
Shop assistant

Goedemorgen! Wat wilt u?

Good morning! What would you like?
You

Ik wil graag een brood.

I would like a loaf of bread.
Shop assistant

Wilt u wit brood of bruin brood?

Would you like white bread or brown bread?
You

Bruin brood, alstublieft.

Brown bread, please.

Keep the conversation going

Kunt u langzamer spreken?

Could you speak more slowly?

Kunt u dat herhalen?

Could you repeat that?

Wat betekent dat?

What does that mean?

Is deze zin goed?

Is this sentence correct?

Choose a tool and keep practising

ChatGPT and Gemini are two options for text conversations. For speaking practice, look for ChatGPT Voice or Gemini Live. Availability and usage limits can depend on your device and account.

AI sometimes gives an incorrect correction or misunderstands what you say. If something seems strange, compare it with your course material or ask your teacher.

Your turn

Try five exchanges in the bakery. Then repeat the conversation without reading the example. Keep one corrected sentence to practise tomorrow.

Want an easier version?

Ask the AI to offer two short Dutch answers each time. Choose one and say it aloud.

Ready for a harder version?

Ask for an A2 conversation. Explain what you want, ask a follow-up question and respond when your first choice is unavailable.
