Generating conversations

Two adults enjoy a conversation at a cafe.

DUTCH CONVERSATION PRACTICE

Practise situations you will actually use

Turn a familiar situation into a short Dutch conversation. Give the AI a role, choose your level and ask it to wait for each answer. Then use what you practise with people around you.

CHOOSE YOUR CONVERSATION PARTNER

One exercise. Two ways to practise.

Use the prompts below with either service. Choose the one you already know, or try the other.

Talk, try and try again

Paste a practice prompt into a chat. Type your answer, or use Voice when available to practise speaking.

Build your practice instruction

Choose a situation and level. Copy the instruction into ChatGPT or Gemini, or read it aloud in a voice conversation. Change English to your preferred language for explanations.

Act as a cafe server. I am the customer. Help me practise Dutch at A1 level. Use short sentences and ask one question at a time. Wait for my answer. If we use voice, speak slowly. Correct one important mistake briefly, then continue. Explain in English only when I ask for help. After five exchanges, give me two useful sentences to practise. Start by greeting me.

Give the AI clear directions

01

Set the scene

Say where you are and who does what: “You are the server. I am the customer.”

02

Control the pace

Ask for one question at a time. If an answer is too difficult, ask for simpler Dutch or an example.

03

Use the feedback

Repeat one corrected sentence. At the end, ask for two expressions you can use again.

Example: ordering a drink

Server

Goedemiddag! Wat wilt u drinken?

Good afternoon! What would you like to drink?
You

Een koffie, alstublieft.

A coffee, please.
Server

Wilt u er iets bij eten?

Would you like something to eat with it?
You

Ja, graag een stuk appeltaart.

Yes, a slice of apple pie, please.

Now change the order: ask for tea and no food. Try without reading the example.

Three more ways to practise

Find the missing word

Give me one simple Dutch A1 sentence with one missing word and three answer options. Make only one option correct. Wait for my answer before showing the correct answer and a short English explanation. Then give me the next sentence.

Turn a word into a sentence

Give me one everyday Dutch word at A1 level. I will write a sentence with it. Wait for my sentence, correct one important mistake and explain it briefly in English. Then give me a new word.

Describe an everyday object

I want to describe an everyday object in Dutch at A2 level. Ask me one question at a time about its colour, size and use. Wait for each answer. Help me make my answers clearer, then ask me to describe the object in three sentences.

Useful phrases when you get stuck

Gebruik eenvoudige woorden.

Use simple words.

Stel één vraag tegelijk.

Ask one question at a time.

Geef een voorbeeld.

Give an example.

Laten we opnieuw beginnen.

Let’s start again.

Make the practice count

AI feedback is not always correct. If a correction conflicts with this course, check it before learning it. A written transcript also cannot show every pronunciation detail: compare difficult sounds with the course recordings.

Finish with five exchanges, two useful expressions and one corrected sentence. Repeat the situation tomorrow with a different order or question.

How can I make it harder?

Ask for A2 Dutch, explain why you want something and ask a follow-up question. Try handling a small problem, such as your first choice being unavailable.
