CHAPTER 1

Lesson 6 · Letters and spelling

Recognise capital letters and spell names, letters and numbers.

Lowercase and capital letters

A letter can be lowercase or capital: a – A, b – B, c – C. Be careful: capital I and lowercase l can look similar.

Look, say and write

Look at the following pictures, and you will see how words can be written with uppercase and lowercase letters. Copy everything into your notebook, as that itself is an exercise and a perfect way to memorize all the letters! There's another crucial aspect to consider. We've learned the pronunciation of the different letters. Observe that every letter also has a name, and the pronunciation of this name typically doesn't match the sounds you've learned in this lesson! These names are utilized when spelling a name or a series of letters, as we will explore in the exercises.
 a - d
 e - h
 i - l
 m - p
 q - t
 u - x
 y - z

Letter names and sounds

A letter’s name is not always the sound it has in a word. Practise both: say the alphabet, then listen to words containing each letter. The number-and-letter strings below are spelling exercises; they do not all represent valid Dutch registration plates.
