CHAPTER 5
Link ideas to add information, offer a choice, show a contrast or explain a reason. Watch what happens to the verb.
Orange: linking word Green: verb
En, of and maar can link words or whole main clauses. When they link main clauses, each clause keeps its own word order.

Ik kook en jij dekt de tafel.
I cook and you set the table.
Ik drink koffie en thee.
I drink coffee and tea.
Wil je koffie of wil je thee?
Do you want coffee or do you want tea?
Gaan we naar de bioscoop of naar het museum?
Are we going to the cinema or to the museum?

Het regent, maar ik ga wandelen.
It is raining, but I am going for a walk.
Ik hou van koffie, maar niet van thee.
I like coffee, but not tea.
These examples give the same reason, but the word order changes.

Ik blijf thuis, want ik ben ziek.
I am staying home because I am ill.
After want, this main clause has the order ik ben ziek.
Ik blijf thuis omdat ik ziek ben.
I am staying home because I am ill.
After omdat, the verb ben goes to the end of this clause.
Ik neem een jas mee, want het is koud.
I am taking a coat because it is cold.
Hij is blij omdat hij een cadeau heeft gekregen.
He is happy because he has received a present.
With more than one verb, the verbs form a group near the end: omdat hij een cadeau heeft gekregen. You may also hear omdat hij een cadeau gekregen heeft.
Daarom means “therefore” or “that is why”. It introduces the result. It is an adverb, not the same type of linking word as omdat.
Ik ben ziek. Daarom blijf ik thuis.
I am ill. That is why I am staying home.
Omdat ik ziek ben, blijf ik thuis.
Because I am ill, I am staying home.
The whole omdat clause takes the first position. The main clause then starts with blijf ik.
